A Long Walk to Water (Section one)

One: the first few chapters, we learnt Salva is an Eleven year-old boy living in south Sudan in 1985, he is part of the Dinka tribe. His tribe recognise each other by their language and their markings, and V shape between their eyebrows. On he and his brother's tenth birthdays, they go to school. He also looks after the cows by taking them to the water hole and trying to shoot small animals with his friends. Its just random fun until they actually catch one. Then they prepare the animal for cooking over an open fire, then munch the meat. When he gets home from school, his mother signals to him, and he runs home. Then his mother prepares a bowl of milk, which he drinks. So no, I don't think his life is anything like mine. I'm female, and back then, girls didn't go to school. But aside from that, he doesn't have lunch for school, I do. He looks after cows for his family. I don't.

The three questions which were repeated a lot as his thoughts were "Where are my family? Are they okay? When will I see them again? Where are we going?"
If I was in this position, I'd probably be thinking exactly the same things. I think he will see them again, but they will be in a slave camp. I also think they aren't necessarily going anywhere, just away from the fighting.

Poor Nya has to travel for half the morning through the desert to get something we take for granted everyday. The desert was hot and thorny, and she talked about stepping on a thorn and having to pull it out, gritting her teeth against the pain. I'd feel pressured and stressed because her family's whole survival depends on her.

They tell each other apart by the appearance and the languages.
